Former NHS Audiologist: Don't Waste Money on These 5 Hearing Aid Options — Even If One of Them Is Free

I spent 30 years fitting hearing aids in the NHS.

In that time, I watched thousands of people try to fix their hearing. Most of them wasted months — sometimes years — on options that either didn't work, cost a fortune, or both.

If you're struggling to hear conversations clearly, you've probably already looked into your options. And you've probably already felt that sinking feeling: everything's either rubbish or ridiculously expensive.

I want to save you some time.

Here are the five most common options people try — and why I'd tell my own family to avoid every single one of them.

Option 1: Wait for the NHS

Free. Decent technology. But the wait is 12 to 18 months. Some areas, two years.

That's not an inconvenience. Alzheimer's Research UK lists untreated hearing loss as a direct risk factor for dementia.

Seven fewer cases per 100 just by addressing hearing loss.

And the aids you eventually get? Bulky, beige, behind-the-ear. 2 in 5 recipients stop wearing them.

Free doesn't mean safe. Not when the cost is time you can't get back.

Option 2: Boots Hearingcare

Excellent technology. Professional audiologists. No complaints about the devices themselves.

But £3,495. On a pension. That's three months of living.

And the aftercare they promise? One former patient documented five consecutive cancelled appointments at Boots.

"To get an appointment is a nightmare," she told me.

You're paying premium prices for a service that often disappears after the sale.

Option 3: SpecSavers

Cheaper than Boots. But they lock you into their aftercare programme.

Need an adjustment? Come back to us. Need new tubing? Come back to us.

Dependency by design. And still £2,000 for something you could get for a fraction of the price.

Option 4: Amazon "hearing aids"

These are not hearing aids. They're amplifiers. There's a critical difference.

A hearing aid processes sound — separates voices from background noise, cancels feedback, adjusts to your environment.

An amplifier makes everything louder. The fridge. The traffic. Your own breathing. But voices? Still muffled.

9 in 10 users report whistling, feedback, and discomfort. Some can genuinely damage your hearing.

£39-79 for something that makes things worse isn't a bargain. It's a trap.

Option 5: Do nothing

The most common option. And the most dangerous.

Most people wait seven to ten years before doing anything. Seven years of pretending you heard what they said. Seven years of slowly withdrawing from the people you love.

And the risk doesn't stay flat. It climbs. Depression. Social isolation. Falls — because your balance is linked to your hearing. I've watched patients go from "a bit hard of hearing" to housebound in five years.

Doing nothing feels safe. It's the most expensive option — you just pay with your life instead of your wallet.

So what actually works?

Every option above fails you in a different way. But they all have one thing in common — none gives you a proper hearing aid at a price a normal person can actually afford.

A former colleague of mine, David Taylor, figured this out. Cut out the middleman. No shops. No salespeople. No overhead. Same core components as the premium brands — delivered direct to your door.

He called it HearWell. I even visited his warehouse myself.

Me visiting my former colleague David at HearWell's warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent. Good to catch up — and good to see where the money actually goes.

I took a pair from the warehouse and gave them to my 84-year-old father. Ex-engineer, stubborn as they come. Refused NHS aids ("not wearing those things"). Wouldn't pay £2,500 for hearing aids.

But missing golf club conversations and match commentary finally got to him. Now wearing HearWell daily - and winning the pub quiz again. "Should've done this years ago," he admitted last week.

At £149, that works out to less than 20p per day. Less than a coffee per week. Because HearWell guarantees a minimum two-year lifespan — and if it fails before that, you get a free replacement.

With a 45-day trial at home, you risk nothing. If they don't work for you, send them back to their Stoke-on-Trent warehouse for a refund.

2 weeks with Hearwell now, amazing value! Returned my £2,400 Specsavers aids for full refund. These work just as well!! Already told 3 mates at the pub about them. Dr Ellis is spot on about the markup at clinics. Should've found these sooner! Thx!

My son sent me this article yesterday after I missed another important phone call. Been on NHS waiting list for 9 months already. Just ordered HearWell with the discount. On pension so the £149 price really helps. Fingers crossed! Will update in a few weeks

Can finally hear the telly without subtitles! Wife doesn't have to repeat herself anymore. Should've done this years ago instead of waiting for NHS. Worth every penny!👍
