Phonak or Smart Hearing? We asked a hearing specialist to test both to see what works best

Published by Emma Whitfield | Hearing & Wellness | Last update: Feb 24 👁 584256 📖 4 min

Let's talk about something no one really explains when you start losing your hearing: how impossible it feels to find something that actually works.

You've probably been to your GP. You've seen the long NHS waiting list.

Maybe you've looked at Boots or Specsavers. You've seen the prices.

And you've thought… surely there's something in between?

We kept seeing two names come up in reviews and forums

Phonak, the premium brand recommended by most private clinics (especially Boots),

and Smart Hearing, a smaller company selling direct for a fraction of the price.

One costs £3,995. The other costs £149.

So we asked Dr. Joanne Prescott, hearing specialist with 26 years fitting hearing aids on the NHS and in private clinics, to test both properly.

And here's what she found.

But first — what type of hearing loss do most people actually have?

This matters, because not all hearing aids are built for the same problem.

Most people assume hearing loss is hearing loss.

But according to the NHS, 80-90% of people with hearing difficulties have what's classified as mild to moderate loss:

- difficulty following conversations

- struggling with the television

- missing words on the phone.

Not silence. Just… unclear.

And that distinction changes everything about which hearing aid you actually need.

What do Phonak and Smart Hearing have in common

  • Both are proper hearing aids and certified medical devices in the UK (UKCA) - not the cheap amplifiers from Amazon that screech and end up in a drawer

  • Both are rechargeable and comfortable enough to wear all day

  • Both made a genuine difference for every single person in Dr. Prescott's test

  • If you're currently wearing nothing, either of these would change your daily life

Where they're different

  • Phonak sits behind the ear with a visible tube. Smart Hearing sits inside the ear canal, virtually invisible.

  • Phonak requires clinic appointments for fitting and follow-ups. Smart Hearing ships to your door in 2-3 days with no appointments needed.

  • Phonak is designed for every type of hearing loss, including severe and complex cases. Smart Hearing is designed specifically for mild to moderate, which is what 80-90% of people actually have.

  • Phonak costs approximately £3,995 through a private clinic (often Boots). Smart Hearing costs £149 direct.

Think of it this way: Phonak is a Ferrari. Smart Hearing is a Volkswagen. Both get you to the shops and back. One is engineered for a racetrack you'll never visit.

She tested both for 4 weeks with 6 volunteers — here's what happened

Dr. Prescott recruited six volunteers. Three men, three women. Aged 64-79. All with mild to moderate hearing loss. She tested both devices across real-life settings over four weeks.

With Phonak, everything was excellent. Clear in quiet rooms. Clear watching television. In a busy pub on a Friday night, it handled the background noise impressively, voices came through cleanly even with music and chatter.

With Smart Hearing, the results were remarkably close. Quiet conversation, just as clear.

Television: no noticeable difference.

Phone calls: both perfectly usable.

The busy pub: this was where Phonak was slightly better.

But here's what surprised her most.

"I ran a blind test. Only three of my six volunteers could tell which device they were wearing. The other three couldn't tell the difference at all."

Three out of six people couldn't distinguish a £3,995 hearing aid from a £149 one.

The verdict

Phonak is brilliant technology. Genuinely impressive engineering.

If you have severe hearing loss, it's worth every penny, see an audiologist, and Phonak will serve you well.

But for mild to moderate hearing loss, which is what 80-90% of people actually have, the picture looks very different:

  • Phonak costs £3,995. Smart Hearing costs £149. For the hearing loss most people actually have, the result was virtually the same.

  • Phonak's advanced features made almost no difference for mild to moderate loss, 3 out of 6 volunteers couldn't tell which device they were wearing.

  • Phonak sits behind the ear with a visible tube. Every single tester preferred Smart Hearing's invisible in-ear fit, and actually wore them daily.

  • Phonak needed clinic appointments and follow-ups. Smart Hearing worked straight out of the box, testers were hearing clearly within minutes.

Gerald, 74, one of the test volunteers, said it best: "This gives me back everything I was missing. Why would I pay 23 times more for features I'll never use?"

Final thoughts

For years, people assumed the only real hearing aids were the ones that cost thousands.

But for the vast majority, those with mild to moderate hearing loss, that was never true.

They were just paying for technology they didn't need.

Normal price of Smart Hearing is £300, but after this article, the founder extended their 50% discount for our readers (see button below).

At £149, that's less than 20p per day over a 2 year guaranteed lifespan. 45-day home trial — if they don't work, send them back for a refund.

My son sent me this article yesterday after I missed another important phone call. Just ordered Smart Hearing with the discount. On pension so the £149 price really helps. Fingers crossed! Will update in a few weeks

Can finally hear the telly without subtitles! Wife doesn't have to repeat herself anymore. Should've done this years ago instead of waiting for NHS. Worth every penny!👍
